Irina Gabiani studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts and continued her education at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (1994–1997), where she developed an expanded approach to artistic practice.

Born and raised in Tbilisi, Georgia, Gabiani developed her artistic language through painting and drawing, later expanding her practice into collage, video and installation. Since the late 1990s, she has lived and worked in Luxembourg, where she continues to develop a multidisciplinary artistic practice.

Her artistic practice explores transformation, memory and time. Through her work, Gabiani examines how forms, materials and images carry traces of their previous states, and how meaning emerges through processes of change.

Her use of collage reflects an interest in preserving fragments of time. Found printed materials become witnesses of specific moments, carrying the visual language and traces of an era before being transformed into new compositions.

Her art invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between the individual and the universe, revealing the interconnectedness of forms, matter and experiences shaped by continuous transformation.

Gabiani has presented her work internationally in museums, galleries and art institutions, including the 54th Venice Biennale, Georgian National Museum, Mudam Luxembourg, CAPC Bordeaux, Museo Nazionale del Cinema in Turin, Villa Croce Museum of Contemporary Art in Genoa and other international venues.

Selected Distinctions

In 2011, Irina Gabiani participated in the 54th Venice Biennale within the Italian Pavilion at the Arsenale, Venice, Italy.

The project was subsequently presented in Luxembourg at the European Court of Justice and the University of Luxembourg, curated by the Italian Institute of Culture.

Gabiani is listed on ArtFacts.net among the Top 25 Italian Female Painters.
